As many of you know, my first book — Spam Nation — hits bookstore shelves on Nov. 18. I want to thank those of you who have already pre-ordered the book, and offer a small enticement for those who have yet to secure a copy.
Spam Nation is a true story about organized cybercriminals, some of whom are actively involved in using malware-laced spam to empty bank accounts belonging to small- and medium-sized businesses in the United States and Europe. I’ve written extensively about organizations that have lost tens of millions of dollars from these cyberheists. I’ve also encouraged online banking customers to take advantage of various “Live CD” technologies that allow users to sidestep the very malware that powers these cyberheists.
In July, I wrote about ZeusGard, one such technology that’s designed to streamline the process of adopting the Live CD approach for online banking. The makers of ZeusGard got such a positive response from that story that they offered to partner with Yours Truly in promoting Spam Nation!
I’m pleased to report that the first 1,000 customers to purchase two or more copies of Spam Nation — including any combination of digital, physical and/or audio versions of the book — before the official book launch on Nov. 18 will receive a complimentary KrebsOnSecurity-branded version of ZeusGard (pictured above)!
If you already pre-ordered two copies of the book, print, digital and/or audio, and have submitted the proof-of-purchase to spamnation@sourcebookspr.com, you will automatically receive a ZeusGard and do not need to resend that proof-of-purchase. If you’ve already pre-ordered a copy and wish to acquire another (print, digital or audio copy), please make sure to send that extra proof-of-purchase to spamnation@sourcebookspr.com. Pre-order your copy via several prominent booksellers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Politics & Prose, and Powell’s.
So far, we have just 19 buyers who’ve chosen to purchase two or more copies, so we’ve got plenty more to go. I’ll put up another post if we get close to making the 1,000 customer limit.
Pre-orders are a big deal in the publishing industry because they signal to book sellers that a book is generating buzz and demand. They’re also important because they count toward the first week of sales, which can determine whether a book lands on best-seller lists.
So far, the reviews are very positive. Kirkus Reviews found the book “an eye-opening, immensely distressing exposé on the current state of organized cyberspammers.” Publisher’s Weekly calls Spam Nation “timely, informative, and sadly relevant in our cyber-dependent age.”
The Spam Nation book tour will kick off on Nov. 20 in Chicago, the hometown of my publisher — Sourcebooks. From there, we’ll be stopping in several other cities, including San Francisco, Seattle and Austin. In early December, I’ll be signing copies of Spam Nation at bookstores in New York and Washington, D.C. Please see the full schedule for more details, and join me if you’re able!
I hope you’ll be coming back to the motherland (Alabama) for a book signing (as long as it isn’t on a weekend while football season is still going. War Eagle)
I hope the USB stick are BadUSB ones …
That would be a nice trick to have access to numerous computers of Security Aware People infected 🙂
Amazon really annoys me
UK Amazon – £13.56 for hard cover
US amazon – $15.80 – £10 UK
I will be buying though but prob not till after november 🙁
Any chance you will be making this available on Google Play?
Do you benefit in some way from pre-orders?
I was planning to wait until the book was available, but due to your message I just tried to pre-order Spam Nation from Barnes and Noble (Nook Book) and it did not take my order.
Hi Kate,
Yes, I tried to explain that here
“Pre-orders are big deal in the publishing industry because they signal to book sellers that a book is generating buzz and demand. They’re also important because they count toward the first week of sales, which can determine whether a book lands on best-seller lists.”
I preordered two copies. I’m looking forward to reading the book. Hopefully the preorders get you on the best seller list. You deserve it! Your reporting is fantastic!
I assume the wifi dongle is not part of the deal. How does Zeusgard handle sites that want to write cookies to remember you. Also, what about printing of payment confirmations?
That is correct, the WiFi adapter is not part of the deal. ZeusGard is read-only , so no cookies will be stored after a reboot. Direct printing is not supported by ZeusGard, but you can download a copy of your statement, and email it to yourself using a web based email service like Gmail or Hotmail.
Thanks. Has Zeusgard thought about adding a PDF printer driver? Can the computer’s hard drive be accessed by Zeusgard to save or retrieve any files?
Hi Brian,
I pre-ordered hard cover and kindle — if that qualifies as two, that’s great, if not no worries!
Have a successful Thursday,
all the best,
Helene
Thanks, Helene. Yes, as the story says, any combination of audio, hard copy or digital copy will suffice. Just please make sure to send any proof(s) of purchase to spamnation@sourcebookspr.com
i’m not sure what to send
i pre-orderd but they don’t really give you a receipt for the kindle pre-order.
should i send the order numbers? send pdf of the order page?
not sure about teh details of this
Yes, you can just send a screen shot of the page or a pdf of the confirmation. Either one will suffice. Thanks!
In your Amazon you should be able to look up your order information in your account, and click “print invoice”. This works with both Kindle (digital orders), and physical book orders. Just ordered the Kindle version and will be ordering the book here shortly.
Hi Brian – first of all, great blog, love all of your posts, keep up the great work!!! While I don’t live even remotely close to there, I think you may want to add Raleigh NC to your list of cities on your book tour – there are lots of large tech companies there and it may help raise the profile of your book and the very timely and important issues it raises. Just a thought. All the best!
I agree about Audible – I would have preferred to pre-order there.
See you in the ‘Burbs on the 20th Sir Krebs
I’m in. Hardcover and Audio MP3, emailed. Woot!
Brian, I did my part to push this book and I know if the book is just half as good as your blog I’m good. ;- ) You do a great job and I hope you keep these stories. I know you will since we are still far away from taking “security” serious. Regards, Michael
What exactly do I need to send you if I order both handcover and Kindle from Amazon? thank you.
Was this ever answered?
Duh. Guess I should have done a search first.
From a previous thread on SpamNation, when asked the same question, BrianKrebs replied on July 9, 2014 at 3:30 pm:
“Forward your emailed proof-of-purchase, or a scan/photo of your print receipt
Basically anything that says you purchased the book, the quantity purchased and your name and mailing address.”
I just pre-ordered a Kindle copy and an Audio CD to take Brian up on his special “enticement”. I bought the ZeusGard WIFI dongle as well.
If anyone out there is sitting on the fence about this, here’s a thought for you.
Brian Krebs is offering a unique service to all of us that NO ONE ELSE IS nor is likely to. And we get it FOR FREE.
He is asking for a simple consideration from us and to be honest, we are getting the better part of the deal. I for one feel we owe him this small favor for all the crap and out right danger he faces to deliver his unique coverage.
As asked but unanswered in comments to the original pre-order posting in July:
**can I order from my local bookstore, and send/fax receipts as above? **
(sorry, it seems like the answer is yes, but it’s a medium hassle getting to the bookstore)
I ordered two books off Amazon, one of them for my Kindle. I see your listed as #1 Best Seller in Computer Network Security on Amazon.
I ordered one copy because thats all I need; I support you, Krebs! You are doing amazing work, sir!
Are there any more drives left if I order two books?
I assume note–from the text:
“So far, we have just 19 buyers who’ve chosen to purchase two or more copies, so we’ve got plenty more to go. I’ll put up another post if we get close to making the 1,000 customer limit.”
Is it the latest version of ZeusGard? What version is it?
I see from photos of ZeusGard that there are “A0413” or “B0714” on the front of the sticks. Do they stand for versions?
Thanks!
I see from your photo of your ZeusGard Wifi the number is B1113.
I looked at ZeusGard website and found no info what the version is considered current.
Steve,
The version that ships will almost certainly a newer revision of the one pictured in this article. But I don’t know what that version number will be.
Is this two copies and free ZeusGUard offer available through Amazon.ca or any Canadian source?
