Here’s a clever new twist on an old email scam that could serve to make the con far more believable. The message purports to have been sent from a hacker who’s compromised your computer and used your webcam to record a video of you while you were watching porn. The missive threatens to release the video to all your contacts unless you pay a Bitcoin ransom. The new twist? The email now references a real password previously tied to the recipient’s email address.

The basic elements of this sextortion scam email have been around for some time, and usually the only thing that changes with this particular message is the Bitcoin address that frightened targets can use to pay the amount demanded. But this one begins with an unusual opening salvo:

“I’m aware that <substitute password formerly used by recipient here> is your password,” reads the salutation.

The rest is formulaic:

You don’t know me and you’re thinking why you received this e mail, right?

Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.

What exactly did I do?

I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you’ve got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It’s you doing nasty things!).

What should you do?

Well, I believe, $1400 is a fair price for our little secret. You’ll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don’t know this, search “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).

BTC Address: 1Dvd7Wb72JBTbAcfTrxSJCZZuf4tsT8V72
(It is cAsE sensitive, so copy and paste it)

Important:

You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don’t get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with “Yes!” and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don’t waste my time and yours by replying to this email.

KrebsOnSecurity heard from three different readers who received a similar email in the past 72 hours. In every case, the recipients said the password referenced in the email’s opening sentence was in fact a password they had previously used at an account online that was tied to their email address.

However, all three recipients said the password was close to ten years old, and that none of the passwords cited in the sextortion email they received had been used anytime on their current computers.

It is likely that this improved sextortion attempt is at least semi-automated: My guess is that the perpetrator has created some kind of script that draws directly from the usernames and passwords from a given data breach at a popular Web site that happened more than a decade ago, and that every victim who had their password compromised as part of that breach is getting this same email at the address used to sign up at that hacked Web site.

I suspect that as this scam gets refined even more, perpetrators will begin using more recent and relevant passwords — and perhaps other personal data that can be found online — to convince people that the hacking threat is real. That’s because there are a number of shady password lookup services online that index billions of usernames (i.e. email addresses) and passwords stolen in some of the biggest data breaches to date.

Alternatively, an industrious scammer could simply execute this scheme using a customer database from a freshly hacked Web site, emailing all users of that hacked site with a similar message and a current, working password. Tech support scammers also may begin latching onto this method as well.

Sextortion — even semi-automated scams like this one with no actual physical leverage to backstop the extortion demand — is a serious crime that can lead to devastating consequences for victims. Sextortion occurs when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don’t provide them with images of a sexual nature, sexual favors, or money.

According to the FBI, here are some things you can do to avoid becoming a victim:

-Never send compromising images of yourself to anyone, no matter who they are — or who they say they are.
-Don’t open attachments from people you don’t know, and in general be wary of opening attachments even from those you do know.
-Turn off [and/or cover] any web cameras when you are not using them.

The FBI says in many sextortion cases, the perpetrator is an adult pretending to be a teenager, and you are just one of the many victims being targeted by the same person. If you believe you’re a victim of sextortion, or know someone else who is, the FBI wants to hear from you: Contact your local FBI office (or toll-free at 1-800-CALL-FBI).

I got virtually the exact message quoted above. I remembered seeing this headline on Krebs (I get the email alerts) and thankfully I’ve read this thread to get a sense for the fact that this is an automated scam.

My password and login were also old ones which seems to match the pattern that our personal information is from an old data breach.

    I forwarded the message to
    reportphishing@apwg.org
    spam@uce.gov
based on the useful recommendations above.

This page also has some useful info:
    https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0003-phishing

I am curious if anyone has had any subsequent follow up with the extortionist.

Just received the same email as you report. In my case, the “ransom” amount is $8,000.
      The sending address was kxvlesleyuv@hotmail.com
I forwarded the original message, with expanded message headers, to the 2 addresses you mentioned and to abuse@hotmail.com

I know, XXX is one of your personal password now I will cut to the chase. You do not know me but I know you very well and you must be wondering why are you receiving this e-mail, right?

I installed malware on porn vids (adult porn) and you know what, you accessed this adult web site to experience pleasure (if you know what I mean). And while you were busy watching those videos, your browser initiated working as a RDP (Remote Computer) that has a backdoor which allowed me accessibility to your display as well as your web camera recordings. After that, my malware collected your complete contacts from fb, as well as email.

    Exactly what I want?
It’s just your misfortune that I saw your misdemeanor. Later I gave in more time than I probably should have investigating into your data and generated a split screen sextape. First part displays the recording you were watching and other part shows the view from your web camera (it is someone doing nasty things). Frankly, I am willing to delete everything about you and allow you to get on with your life. And I am going to present you two options that may accomplish it. Those two option is to either ignore this email (not recommended), or pay me 0.55 BTC to close this mattter for life.

    Exactly what can you do?
Let us explore above two options in more details. First Option is to turn a blind eye to my e mail. Let’s see what will happen if you choose this path. I definitely will send your sextape to all your contacts including close relatives, coworkers, etc. It does not save you from the humiliation you and your family will feel when relatives and buddies discover your dirty videotape. Wise option is to make the payment of 0.55 BTC. We’ll call this my “confidentiality fee”. Now Lets discuss what happens when you select this choice. Your little secret remains your secret. I will erase the recording. After you make the payment, You move on with your daily life and family as if none of this ever occurred. You will make the transfer through Bitcoins

Amount to be paid: 0.55 BTC
    My BTC Address: 1EXBvNTWE9G7jHnVAKz1GTxTtqZgzEQ75W

Note: You now have one day to make the payment. (I’ve a unique pixel in this mail, and now I know that you’ve read this e-mail). If I don’t get the BitCoins, I will definately send your sextape to all of your contacts including close relatives, co-workers, etc. nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will destroy the videotape immediately. If you want to have evidence, reply with “yes!” and I will send your sextape to your 12 friends. It is a non negotiable one time offer, so kindly don’t waste my personal time & yours by responding to this e-mail.

    Same here.

Just got an email like 20 minutes ago, and googled this post. I’m using 1Password so I quickly got a list of all sites where that password of mine was used.

Turned out 54 items! Crap. That’s 54 items to changes now, and that’s no quick process… And btw now I see that 1password warns me about this password being compromised “according to https://haveibeenpwned.com/“.

So, even this being an automated scam what I don’t know for sure is… how do I check for RDP ports open or a key logger installed? I looked through the list of processes on my macOS, but there’s so much stuff and processes often have obscure names, that I’m hardly able to sanity check this manually.

  4. Jason

I got this same scam email yesterday and my experience was similar to everything I am reading here. It is startling to see a password in an email from a stranger. The only thing I have to add is I did call the FBI and all I had to start to say is “I got this email and…” and the gentleman on the other end of the line was able to finish my sentence. He said he and his team have been getting swamped with calls related to this scam and he has actually been keeping an eye on his own email because given the numbers, he wouldn’t be surprised to get one himself. He of course advised no further action on my part beyond registering this on the FBI website.

  5. My Name

Here is the email I received

I know, ##### is one of your personal password and now I will directly come to the point. You do not know anything about me but I know alot about you and you are probably wondering why you are getting this e-mail, right?

Don’t tell anyone what will you be utilizing the bitcoin for or they possibly will not offer it to you. The task to get bitcoin can take a few days so do not put it off. If I don’t get the Bitcoins, I will definitely send out your video to all of your contacts including relatives, co-workers, and so forth. having said that, if I receive the payment, I’ll erase the video immediately. I just got the exact same email using a password which is at least 10 years old. I freaked out at first but since I haven’t been on a porn site in years I wasn’t that concerned. And I covered the camera on the front of my iMac as soon as I bought it. So all they would get would be a blank screen. And as far as people in my address book seeing me jacking off? I could care less. I’m a guy… not like I’m the only one out there doing it. And for the past few years… for this very reason…. I quit viewing any porn sites. I’ve gone back to my DVDs!

  7. Bryan

Family got one today from: Cliff Blumberg that read:

I had the same type of e-mail. Won’t include it since it was almost identical to those already shown. Differences were:
Mine was from Fax Voss (upclerissaxpl@outlook.com).
    Amount was $7000.
    BTC address was 1DEQHLWJ8zGhkXQZRX37byQDeU6aqrMhCr.
In case it helps, based on some research of where I used the email address the scammers used to contact me and the password they had .. the likely source is my LinkedIn account.

Got mine today, scared me until I found this site. Here’s the BTC: 1GWM5VTC4R1RMzgRrQpKGENwFJnFtKUn8x

I got an email like this last night. I Googled “ransomware email hacked passwords” and I came across your website. Your information is very helpful and I suggest sending an email to office@phish365.microsoft.com if the email comes from a Hotmail/Outlook account.

  12. MAGA

This is actually white interesting – I think this is the first time I’ve been able to see how much scammers are making. A really clever scam, most people have secrets and this plays on that brilliantly.

  13. Matt Cary

Received this for an old throwaway password that I used for sites I didn’t care about. I used this for a Dell account (that had no payment information) and Dell got hacked recently. But I must have used it on 50 sites. I should have added the website on the password so that it was something like thro-away-pw-4-dell and then I’d know which site it was.

  14. Sean

I received one of these emails today.

Where their scam falls flat is that I use all Linux computers and I know they are not infected because you can’t infect a Linux machine with a PC virus.

It did remind me that I should check my passwords and change a few of them (out of the over 600 I have in my password manager.

It’s most likely that they got my email and password from the Linkedin breach a while ago.

What they don’t know is I used to be a male stripper and my friends and family know I’ve been in porn, so I’m not bothered about someone leaking photos of me.

  15. Jae Markham

Lets get right to the point. No person has compensated me to investigate about you. You don’t know me and you’re probably thinking why you are getting this e-mail?

actually, I installed a software on the adult vids (porn) website and there’s more, you visited this website to experience fun (you know what I mean). While you were viewing videos, your web browser started out functioning as a Remote control Desktop that has a keylogger which provided me accessibility to your display screen as well as web camera. Just after that, my software gathered your complete contacts from your Messenger, social networks, and e-mail . After that I created a double-screen video. First part displays the video you were watching (you have a nice taste lol . . .), and 2nd part displays the recording of your webcam, yeah it is you.

You will have 2 possibilities. We should read up on the options in particulars:

First solution is to just ignore this email message. As a consequence, I will send your actual recorded material to almost all of your personal contacts and visualize concerning the shame you will get. And definitely should you be in an intimate relationship, precisely how it will eventually affect?

Other alternative will be to compensate me $7000. I will describe it as a donation. Consequently, I will straightaway delete your videotape. You will keep going your life like this never took place and you would never hear back again from me.

You’ll make the payment via Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search for “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).

I am not looking to charge a fee a huge amount, I just like to be rewarded. You now have one day in order to pay. I’ve a unique pixel in this email message, and at this moment I know that you have read this email message. If I don’t receive the BitCoins, I will definately send out your video to all of your contacts including family members, colleagues, and many others. Having said that, if I receive the payment, I’ll destroy the video immediately. It is a nonnegotiable offer, and so please don’t waste mine time and yours by responding to this e-mail. If you want to have evidence, reply Yes! and I definitely will send your video to your 8 friends.

i just got this scam a couple of days ago – 7/24. from “mela destavola”, email address zrsecundaqx@outlook.com. checked the BTC address — 1Ms93QT1gz5E8i3GcinFALELwxB4vkKgfZ — nobody’s paid this particular one yet. here’s the email text. ugh. hate this stuff. and on the same morning that i got a bunch of spam voicemails accusing me of tax fraud! this modern world sucks.

—– is your pass. Lets get directly to point. Absolutely no one has paid me to investigate you. You may not know me and you’re probably wondering why you are getting this e-mail?

In fact, I actually setup a malware on the 18+ video clips (porno) website and there’s more, you visited this site to experience fun (you know what I mean). When you were viewing video clips, your browser started out functioning as a RDP that has a keylogger which provided me with access to your display screen and also web camera. Just after that, my software collected your complete contacts from your Messenger, FB, and emailaccount. And then I made a double-screen video. 1st part shows the video you were watching (you’ve got a nice taste lol), and 2nd part displays the view of your web cam, & it is you.

You get two choices. We will check out the choices in particulars:

1st alternative is to skip this e mail. In this case, I will send out your video to every one of your contacts and also just think concerning the embarrassment you experience. Not to mention should you be in an affair, exactly how it will affect?

Number 2 choice should be to compensate me $7000. We are going to call it a donation. Subsequently, I will instantly remove your video footage. You can resume your daily life like this never happened and you never will hear back again from me.

You’ll make the payment through Bitcoin (if you don’t know this, search “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).

If I do not get the BitCoins, I will certainly send your video to all of your contacts including family members, co-workers, etc. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will destroy the recording immediately. I called the FBI hotline (800) CALL -FBI and they were very familiar with the scam. They claim it started in the last week and they don’t think there’s anything to it. As someone stated above, they also told me they are getting a ton of calls about this.

their instruction to me was to file a complaint with them at http://www.ic3.gov. You have to fill out information and the ask you to copy and past the email with the header information so their analysts can analyze it. they said not to respond or attempt to pay (some people are actually trying to pay). Just wanted to share.

Has anyone found they used an email address totally not associated with a hacked site? Wondering how they connected the two.

  19. Bill

I just got this email. I was eating lunch at my desk and just about tossed it all. It is an old pew for most accounts but it is still in use someplaces. I immediately went and changed my email passwords. Then thought to search the web to see if anyone else has had this issue I had a dark scan ran just the other day and found 7 time that my email had been found. I ran the scan like Eugene stated, https://haveibeenpwned.com/ and found 9 on 1 email and 4 on another.

Got Same one today (jul 28 2018) from a password from almost a decade ago and one I obviously don’t use. I also tape up my cameras on all computers – so no chance of this being true.
I’m also not on social media – so their fake threats to send to my social contacts is stupid.

My laptop screen – which obviously had my webcam built in above it – was badly cracked around six months ago, and I removed it. Since then, I have been using the laptop keyboard, a HDMI cable and using a flatscreen TV as a make-shift monitor (i.e. there is no webcam), so I knew he was bluffing.

However, I couldn’t get my head around the fact that this person legitimately knew the password I use for unimportant accounts that allow simple passwords (i.e. without numbers, symbols, etc.).

Anyway, thanks for explaining this with the single website security breach thing. I wonder which website it was though?
