Here’s a clever new twist on an old email scam that could serve to make the con far more believable. The message purports to have been sent from a hacker who’s compromised your computer and used your webcam to record a video of you while you were watching porn. The missive threatens to release the video to all your contacts unless you pay a Bitcoin ransom. The new twist? The email now references a real password previously tied to the recipient’s email address.
The basic elements of this sextortion scam email have been around for some time, and usually the only thing that changes with this particular message is the Bitcoin address that frightened targets can use to pay the amount demanded. But this one begins with an unusual opening salvo:
“I’m aware that <substitute password formerly used by recipient here> is your password,” reads the salutation.
The rest is formulaic:
You don’t know me and you’re thinking why you received this e mail, right?
Well, I actually placed a malware on the porn website and guess what, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching the video, your web browser acted as a RDP (Remote Desktop) and a keylogger which provided me access to your display screen and webcam. Right after that, my software gathered all your contacts from your Messenger, Facebook account, and email account.
What exactly did I do?
I made a split-screen video. First part recorded the video you were viewing (you’ve got a fine taste haha), and next part recorded your webcam (Yep! It’s you doing nasty things!).
What should you do?
Well, I believe, $1400 is a fair price for our little secret. You’ll make the payment via Bitcoin to the below address (if you don’t know this, search “how to buy bitcoin” in Google).
BTC Address: 1Dvd7Wb72JBTbAcfTrxSJCZZuf4tsT

(It is cAsE sensitive, so copy and paste it)Important:
You have 24 hours in order to make the payment. (I have an unique pixel within this email message, and right now I know that you have read this email). If I don’t get the payment, I will send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so forth. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I will erase the video immidiately. If you want evidence, reply with “Yes!” and I will send your video recording to your 5 friends. This is a non-negotiable offer, so don’t waste my time and yours by replying to this email.
KrebsOnSecurity heard from three different readers who received a similar email in the past 72 hours. In every case, the recipients said the password referenced in the email’s opening sentence was in fact a password they had previously used at an account online that was tied to their email address.
However, all three recipients said the password was close to ten years old, and that none of the passwords cited in the sextortion email they received had been used anytime on their current computers.
It is likely that this improved sextortion attempt is at least semi-automated: My guess is that the perpetrator has created some kind of script that draws directly from the usernames and passwords from a given data breach at a popular Web site that happened more than a decade ago, and that every victim who had their password compromised as part of that breach is getting this same email at the address used to sign up at that hacked Web site.
I suspect that as this scam gets refined even more, perpetrators will begin using more recent and relevant passwords — and perhaps other personal data that can be found online — to convince people that the hacking threat is real. That’s because there are a number of shady password lookup services online that index billions of usernames (i.e. email addresses) and passwords stolen in some of the biggest data breaches to date.
Alternatively, an industrious scammer could simply execute this scheme using a customer database from a freshly hacked Web site, emailing all users of that hacked site with a similar message and a current, working password. Tech support scammers also may begin latching onto this method as well.
Sextortion — even semi-automated scams like this one with no actual physical leverage to backstop the extortion demand — is a serious crime that can lead to devastating consequences for victims. Sextortion occurs when someone threatens to distribute your private and sensitive material if you don’t provide them with images of a sexual nature, sexual favors, or money.
According to the FBI, here are some things you can do to avoid becoming a victim:
-Never send compromising images of yourself to anyone, no matter who they are — or who they say they are.
-Don’t open attachments from people you don’t know, and in general be wary of opening attachments even from those you do know.
-Turn off [and/or cover] any web cameras when you are not using them.
The FBI says in many sextortion cases, the perpetrator is an adult pretending to be a teenager, and you are just one of the many victims being targeted by the same person. If you believe you’re a victim of sextortion, or know someone else who is, the FBI wants to hear from you: Contact your local FBI office (or toll-free at 1-800-CALL-FBI).
I received this today and immediately spotted it was SPAM. I’ve tried to search for a way of contacting BITCOIN so the account could be blocked when I found this site. Is it possible to contact BITCOIN ?
Anithing happend? I got One today
I’ve now had two in the past week. The first on the 24th and the second today.
The first appeared straight into my Thunderbird inbox and there was no sign of it on my mail server, whilst the second came via my mail server.
Interestingly the second stated “If you want evidence, reply with Yea & I will send out your video recording to your 7 friends.” and seven email addresses had been added to my whitelist were previously there had been non.
I’m now wondering if my email account has been hacked.
I received the email too.
When they say “if you want proff reply xxx”
What happens if i reply? Anyone tried?
I’m curious.
I have no webcam XD XD
I believe scammers want receivers to believe that they still have control over victim’s webcam.
Of course since the whole email is a lie, nothing will happen 🙂
I received one as well, according to headers it came from someone’s hacked server (as many spam messages do):

I got this message 3 days ago and ignored it. Nothing has happened. It’s just a scam with no punch behind it.
I´ve just received a very similar mail today, but in fact I don´t remenber to have used the password they tell in the mail, so I didn´t give too much credibility to it. Anyway I´m not going to say I don´t feel a bit concerned good to see is just scam.
received the same email message this time asking for $7000
password is a one time password from over 3 years ago linked to a company no longer in operation.
BTC address: 1ME7dUVc4bbC5xdZMdd75RffvoznGsDaNC
One thing to note is this company was bought out by the company I now work for. Considering raising a ticket with internal security as a breach.
I did receive a similar message the 27th July. The password the “hacker” refers was never ever used by me. I just ignored it not before pasting the text into a PDF document and reporting it to the police. It does seem pure scam as I do not have a facebook profile, no messenger, no linkedin and never visit porn sites. I also never used a webcam and I do not have it installed on my PC. On laptops I have it taped.
Anyway, it would be advisable never to answer these types of e-mails and also never to copy paste the supposed Bitcoin link.
Do not worry but report to your local authorities.
Cheers
Received one today from “Angela” (i.e. no return email address provided) asking for $1000.

Another one received one today from “Kathryn” (i.e. no return email address provided) asking for $1000.

I received this today. As the article states, it was a VERY old password of mine. I know I haven’t pleasured myself to online porn, so I wasn’t worried. Still disturbing.

I got same email today, twice. Password is still in use in some sites and accounts but i have checked and niether one of those accounts is not connected with the email adress where I got this email. I am not sure if I used this password for this email account or it was a more than 7 years ago.
Should I need to do something? To change this password on every of those sites/account even if they are not connected with this email address?
Received similar email today from:

Let’s get straight to the point. I know that ******** is your password. More importantly, I am aware about your secret and I’ve evidence of your secret. You don’t know me and no one employed me to check out you.
It’s just your misfortune that I discovered your blunder. The truth is, I actually installed a malware on the adult videos (porn) and you visited this website to have fun (you know what I mean). When you were watching video clips, your browser began working as a Rdp (Remote desktop) having a key logger which gave me access to your display as well as web camera. Just after that, my software gathered all of your contacts from your messenger, social networks, as well as email.
After that I gave in much more hours than I should’ve exploring into your life and created a double screen video. First part displays the video you were watching and second part shows the recording from your webcam (its you doing nasty things).
Frankly, I want to forget all about you and allow you to continue with your daily life. And my goal is to give you two options that will achieve that. The above option is either to ignore this letter, or simply just pay me $ 3250. Let’s understand those two options in more detail.
First Option is to ignore this e mail. Let’s see what will happen if you take this option. I will, no doubt send out your video to your contacts including relatives, co-workers, etc. It won’t save you from the humiliation your household will face when family and friends learn your dirty details from me.
Other Option is to pay me $ 3250. We’ll name this my “confidentiality fee”. Now let me tell you what will happen if you pick this path. Your secret will remain your secret. I’ll erase the recording immediately. You move on with your lifetime that nothing ever happened.
Now you may be thinking, “I will go to the cops”. Let me tell you, I have covered my steps to ensure this message can’t be linked returning to me plus it won’t prevent the evidence from destroying your life. I’m not trying to steal all your savings. I am just looking to be paid for my efforts I place into investigating you. Let’s assume you decide to make pretty much everything go away and pay me my confidentiality fee. You’ll make the payment by Bitcoins (if you do not know this, type “how to buy bitcoins” in search engine)
Amount to be paid: $ 3250
Receiving Bitcoin Address: 12*oX8NybfMKL9ogyjaPhwrUWfD9PysLoDV (You need to Delete * from it and note it)
Expalin nobody what you should be transferring the Bitcoins for or they might not provide it to you. The method to obtain bitcoins can take a day or two so do not delay.
I’ve a unique pixel within this e-mail, and now I know that you’ve read this email message. You now have 2 days to make the payment. If I do not get the BitCoin, I will definitely send your video to all of your contacts including relatives, coworkers, and so on. You better come up with an excuse for friends and family before they find out. Nonetheless, if I do get paid, I’ll erase the recording and all other proofs immediately. It is a non-negotiable offer, thus don’t ruin my time and yours. Your time has started. You should be aware that my software will still be recording what action you’re taking after you’re done reading this letter. Let me assure you that If you google anything inappropriate then I am going to send out your video to your members of your family, coworkers before time finishes.
I got same email today Frank. Thanks for posting.
Pretty much the same for me. I’m pasting the BTC address whatever that is in case it’s helpful for other people to find this site. It was a great help to me to submit a complaint to the IC3.
Amount was $2600

I’m going to cut to the chase. I know that xxxxx is your password. More importantly, I know your secret and I have proof of this. You don’t know me personally and no one hired me to examine you.
It’s just your misfortune that I found your misadventures. Well, I actually setup a malware on the adult videos (pornographic material) and you visited this web site to experience fun (you know what I mean). When you were busy watching videos, your web browser initiated functioning as a Rdp (Remote control desktop) with a key logger which provided me with access to your display screen and also cam. Right after that, my software obtained your entire contacts from messenger, social networks, and mailbox.
Next, I put in much more hours than I should’ve digging into your life and made a two view video. First part shows the video you were watching and second part displays the capture of your web cam (its you doing dirty things).
Frankly, I want to forget all information about you and let you move on with your life. And I am about to offer you two options that will accomplish that. These two option is to either ignore this letter, or perhaps pay me $ 3200. Let’s explore above two options in details.
Option One is to ignore this e mail. Let me tell you what is going to happen if you select this option. I will send out your video recording to your entire contacts including friends and family, colleagues, and so forth. It does not help you avoid the humiliation your self will have to feel when family and friends uncover your unpleasant details from me.
Option 2 is to make the payment of $ 3200. We will call this my “confidentiality tip”. Now let me tell you what will happen if you opt this choice. Your secret will remain your secret. I will destroy the video immediately. You continue on with your lifetime that none of this ever happened.
At this point you must be thinking, “I should go to the cops”. Let me tell you, I’ve taken steps to ensure this message cannot be tracked returning to me plus it won’t stay away from the evidence from destroying your health. I am not looking to steal all your savings. I am just looking to be compensated for my efforts I put into investigating you. Let’s hope you have chosen to produce pretty much everything vanish entirely and pay me my confidentiality fee. You will make the payment via Bitcoins (if you don’t know how, type “how to buy bitcoins” on google)
Amount to be paid: $ 3200
Bitcoin Address to Send: 173KtJ19cei*yTEjkhCaqELBXPqEAF8QYEn ( You need to Edit * from this string and note it)
Expalin no one what you will be utilizing the Bitcoins for or they possibly will not provide it to you. The process to have bitcoin will take a couple of days so do not wait.

It is a non negotiable offer, so kindly do not waste my personal time & yours. Your time is running out. Please note that, my tracker will definitely be tracking the actions you’re taking after you’re done looking over this letter. To be honest, If you search anything inappropriate I’ll send out your sextape to your relatives, coworkers before your deadline.
Check pwned.com with your email to get a better idea of what breach leaked your password!
Same email here at the exact same time. They wanted $3,600 from me. Thanks for posting this all, I figured it was a scam but they password they gave I still use for a couple sites so it worried me a bit. Going to change it now!
Came from email zohiramtmd@hotmail.com
Got this one today. Seems like an odd one out from the others. Only asked for 460 (??) bucks, and also did not use an old password as a threat. Just told me they have video.

Have several issues to resolve with you Chris *****, is not going to take too long, for you to go through and can certainly get ur attention. Exactly how will you feel when all ur family members or buddies will see you taking proper care of your own self? How would they really feel is the suitable dilemma.
You see exactly where I’m going with this one? I’ve infected a number of porn internet sites with my virus that takes all files from your device and obtains an access to it’s cams, and lots more. And so today i have a video clip of u doing ur stuff and a clip you jerked to, plus all your contact information.
It is ur work e mail, that I have located on your system by the way.
Ok last one, I have also edited the video clip to fit on a single tv screen, therefore it is going to be a lot more relaxing to enjoy for everyone. Anyways- if u need me to erase all your contacts with the movie, this is my BTC wallet address- 1H9LMSPLj4cBWV52ghk81iXBbZF2W5Vw74
just make sure that you will not include no spaces or different symbols. You can quickly find the information on the internet on how to use this method of payment if you have no clue how to. 460 is the sum in us dollars i need to leave you alone permanently.
This e-mail has hidden monitoring program inside and i will be aware of when you’ll read it, and from that minute on, you will be provided with Four days, to make up ur mind.
i promise that each and every contact via ur list will see this footage, if perhaps for whatever reason i will not obtain my money.
U can get in touch with ur nearby authorities or anyone, i doubt that this might help.
hey chris,
i received a message that was almost exactly the one you received:
“Have couple of questions for you [name] , will not take very long, for you to go through and will undoubtedly get ur attention. Exactly how will u really feel whenever all ur loved ones or friends will witness u taking proper care of yourself? How will they truly feel is the proper dilemma here.
You see where I am going with this one? I have infected particular adult internet sites with my virus that takes all files from your system and gets an easy access to it’s cameras, and tons more. And so now i have a video of u wanking and a film u jerked to, and also all ur contact information.
This is your job e mail, that I’ve seen on your system btw.
Oh yeah, I’ve also modified the video clip to fit on one display screen, therefore it is going to be a lot more relaxing to enjoy for everybody. Anyway- if u want me to delete all your contacts with the video clip, this is my Bitcoin wallet address- 1EJuMM4R5nBdf3NMzbC2k8tGngfnRJBcrx
just make sure that u will not include no spaces or different symbols. U can quickly find the information on the net on the best way to use this method of payment if you have no clue how its done. 550 is the amount in us dollars i will need to leave you by yourself once and for all.
This document has hidden tracking program within and i will be aware of when you are going to open it, and from that minute on, you will be provided with 5 days, to makeup ur mind.
i promise that each and every contact coming from your address book will see this video, if for whatever reason i will not see my cash.
U are welcome to make contact with ur nearby authorities or anyone, i doubt that it might help.”
Got a very similar one same day, albeit a few words changed here and there. A different btc wallet though (1NWC4aukt5SBGbt3QRiwdnsvQn5E3AtrxH) which after checking shows that it had received one transaction of about 45o dollars.
Same here, received yesterday (20th July) – almost identical, no mention of any passwords but addresses me by my first and last name towards the beginning. The only variations are certain words being swapped for synonyms e.g. “promise” becomes “guarantee.” But the structure is the same. Email was from a “Katherine Lee.” Easy to see how the more vulnerable / less clued-up could be exploited.
ClamXAV just found this CVE-2018-5028 on my Mac hiding in a powerpoint file. Might be related, might not, but appears to be connected to a vulnerability in Adobe Reader on July 10th.
As in they might have actually accessed a webcam through that vulnerability or what?
Given that the message is common, it may not be related. Did you find anything like that?
I don’t have Adobe reader or adobe anything on my computer so highly highly unlikely. A small insecurity through a program I don’t think is capable of gaining the kind of access to someone’s machine that it would take. You’d have to download and install something I think through a phishing scheme.
Got one this morning, too, with the same text as many already posted. Wanted $3250, and used a password that I have kept on hand (probably foolishly) for about 10-15 years, but only use for stupid, inconsequential sites.
If they really had a keylogger on my machine, which all scans show they don’t, I think they would be far more interested in my banking information than trying to catch me doing something immoral to their puritan eyes.
It came from Arturo Hetzron
Got mine too. Old password from linkedin.
In case you are worried about this, consider the 2 options our friend had:
1. Come up with a malware tool that would install on the computer’s victim upon watching a video that he infected, presumably hacking some sites. In addition he had to capture a video and verify the victim was doing something shameful. I’m guessing this require some luck, and a lot of time to actually make it happen.
2. Get a list of comprised email/password (see, for instance, https://thehackernews.com/2017/12/data-breach-password-list.html). Write a little script to send thousands of emails… Few hours of work, perhaps few days since he does not seem really that smart (btw, I have smart pixel that uses AI in this message that will automatically alert me when he looks at this very message)
I’ll let you decide.
Got one today.
